Introduction
Founded in 1985, SK Gas is Korea’s leading LPG company, expanding from LPG import and distribution into eco-friendly energy such as LNG power generation and hydrogen. Amid rapid change in the energy industry, it aims for global leadership as a “Total Solution Provider” by expanding its existing business, maximizing synergies and creating new growth engines.

SK Gas set out to establish a consistent, highly convenient employee experience standard through a UX/UI standard for its business support portal, helping every employee get used to their work quickly and become more productive. To solve problems such as the vast information and complex structure of its internal systems, many repetitive work functions, system-centered screens, text-heavy information and the absence of user guides, it needed a direction for building a company-wide design system. Based on the purpose and use of B2B and B2C, the UX/UI standard guide prioritized efficiency for management innovation and collaboration among employees and affiliates.

Case Intelligence Summary

Pain Points

Vast information and system-centered screens made employees’ work experience inconsistent.

The internal work systems SK Gas employees use had mostly been built around functions and used for years without a UX renewal. Vast information and complex structures, functions repeated in many places, text-heavy information, system-centered screens and no usage guides combined to give each system a different working experience. Employees used to modern B2B and B2C services were raising complaints about their own systems. At the same time, because skilled users handle repetitive, specialized work there, there was real concern about whether a new UX could be adopted in the field right away without resistance.

Strategic Lens

Information architecture before design: we classified tasks by frequency of use and importance.

Rather than mass-producing design outputs, we focused on understanding information design before visual design. Interviews with field staff and system PMs, analysis of systems in development and in operation, and UI hypotheses reviewed with the client helped us understand how SK Gas works first. We separated the tasks staff look at most often from those most critical to decisions, judging by frequency and importance, and set aside environmental compliance menus from an ESG governance perspective. We also benchmarked work-support systems and employee workspaces at home and abroad, gathering the latest trends in user-centered workflows and sharing them in depth with the client.

Creative Approach

Benchmarking domestic and global work systems, we derived four design governance perspectives.

From the benchmarking we derived four design-governance viewpoints. Navigation in Layout clearly separates GNB, utility and LNB zones; Layout & Grid widens the content area with a top-and-left structure and collapsible navigation; Visual Hierarchy shows levels through grouping, infographics and accordion and slide UI; and Aesthetic Design uses neutral colors as the base with the brand color only as an accent, keeping attention on content. On that basis we set five design principles: consistency and standards, flexibility and efficiency, employee-centered screens, visual hierarchy, and onboarding feedback. Each principle answers one problem — vast information, repeated functions, system-centered screens, text-heavy delivery and missing guides.

Delivered Experience

A UX/UI standard guide and design materials established the basis of a company-wide design system.

A UXUI standard guide and design materials set the baseline for SK Gas's company-wide design system. We first selected, from all design elements, those that could be applied to SK Gas right away and organized the materials around them. The expected outcomes are an optimized information structure that narrows the gap between work menus and users, a consistent and familiar experience across multiple systems, and design governance that supports expanding and connecting internal systems. It was a new start for digital transformation that reaffirmed a simple truth: a good work system begins with understanding how its users work.
