Introduction - Saltcake Media Lab is Saltcake’s in-house research team, experimenting with new technologies and interactions to explore “the essential value of happy experiences.” It builds and exhibits new media technologies such as VR and AR, holograms and motion recognition, and carries the insights gained into the experience design of client projects.
We reimagined the classic Korean tale “The Tortoise and the Hare” as an interactive pop-up book turned by the fingertips. Scenes from the story are projected onto a table, and when children place and move their hands, the scenes respond and lead on to the next part of the story.
We kept the joy of scenes unfolding like a paper pop-up book and added light and motion, turning a book you read into a book you play with. So that even young visitors who cannot yet read could join the story with a wave of the hand, we designed interactions that respond intuitively without any instructions.
At a time when projection interaction using tables and objects rather than screens as the canvas was still rare, this piece connected a familiar story with new technology to create an experience children and adults could enjoy together.
This work was shown at “Oh!”, the interactive exhibition by Saltcake Media Lab held in Hongdae, Seoul, from September 16 to 28, 2014.
