Introduction
Saltcake Media Lab is Saltcake’s in-house research team, experimenting with new technologies and interactions to explore “the essential value of happy experiences.” It builds and exhibits new media technologies such as VR and AR, holograms and motion recognition, and carries the insights gained into the experience design of client projects.

On what looked like an ordinary gallery wall, we hung five frames of different sizes and orientations. But the pictures inside them do not stand still. Within frames built from displays, scenes move and change, carrying visitors to other times and places.

Turning the familiar idea that a picture stays still on its head, we put digital content into the most analog of formats: the picture frame. Walking between the frames, visitors follow scenes that unfold like a single story, a small journey through time.

At a time when digital signage was not yet part of everyday life, this piece explored how to make a screen read as an artwork rather than a device. The digital frames that blend naturally into the space showed early on how digital content could sit within exhibition and retail spaces.

This work was shown at “Oh!”, the interactive exhibition by Saltcake Media Lab held in Hongdae, Seoul, from September 16 to 28, 2014.
