Introduction - SK Communications was SK Group’s internet service company operating Cyworld and Nate. Cyworld, known for its minihompy and “dotori” acorns, became Korea’s leading social network service and expanded to overseas markets including the United States, Japan, China, Germany and Southeast Asia, showing the world the potential of a Korean-style social network.
As social platforms competed worldwide, Cyworld had a strong community in Korea, but internet habits in Southeast Asia and Germany were very different. Its mini-window structure was not intuitive to overseas users, limiting community activity, and localization UX guides for each culture were needed.
Researching the digital behavior of users in Southeast Asia and Germany, we designed PC-based community UX guides tailored to each country’s preferences. The mini-window layout was reinterpreted from local users’ perspectives, and content placement, interactions and information structure were optimized for local flows to encourage steady community participation.
Key Features
• Restructuring based on user research in each market
• Country-specific reinterpretation of the mini-window UI
• Stronger localization of cultural and visual elements
• Interactions designed to raise participation
