Introduction - Saltcake Media Lab is Saltcake’s in-house research team, experimenting with new technologies and interactions to explore “the essential value of happy experiences.” It builds and exhibits new media technologies such as VR and AR, holograms and motion recognition, and carries the insights gained into the experience design of client projects.
In Korea, an adult enjoys an average of more than 300 cups of coffee a year in disposable cups. To bring happy moments to people’s everyday lives, the Saltcake media team developed an AR application that lets people play an augmented reality game on the surface of a disposable coffee cup using a video game platform, raising the value of the customer experience in ordering coffee.
The AR Cup began with the idea of combining Saltcake’s media technology with the coffee cup sleeve, something seen every day yet an environmental problem because it is disposable. The app recognizes the shape of the sleeve as an AR code, so while the camera is pointed at it, users can play a game collecting coffee beans in augmented reality. After clearing round one, they turn the cup around to take on a harder round two.
